Inside our design process!

Today we’re talking about our Full Spectrum Hat.

Highlights:

  • Everything you need to knit the hat is dyed right into one skein.

  • We planned the colours so that the stripes fall in just the right place without cutting yarn or weaving in ends.

  • We want knitters to be able to adjust the size of the hat to their preferences with a shorter or longer brim, so we didn't dye more stripes right into the yarn. Instead, we have instructions on how to add stranded colourwork once you've hit the right spot on your hat.

  • Our Moon Jelly is very different but similar planning went into lining up the colours and the pattern. The hat has an overall gradient, with stranded colourwork right at the crown. We planned the colours so that a gradient starts with pale grey at the brim and has reached its most saturated blue/green by the time you get to the crown so that there will be good contrast for the colourwork.

  • Both hats were part of our yarn + pattern club in previous years. Signups for this summer’s club open May 22. Sign up for my newsletter to get notified when signups go live!

  • We got disconnected early, so the video ends quite suddenly. Whoops! What we meant to say at the end was thank you for joining us!

And if you enjoy our discussions about our design process, we also chatted about shawl design and sock design.
