KnitOvation Projects

It’s Time to reveal the KnitOvation Projects!

I’ve been talking about my new book KnitOvation non-stop over here and I’ve shares some peeks of the motifs in the book, but what you haven’t seen yet is the projects! I always like to give knitters ideas of how they can put the many colourwork motifs to good use, so I designed three new patterns to illustrate some ideas and help you practice your colourwork.

  1. Domed Toque

This graphic, bold toque is designed to help you practice your colorwork and experience shaping in pattern. A marvellous architectural dome is created with crown shaping.

  2. Nautilus Mitts

Take a trip to the watery depths with nautiluses in the waves. These small mitts will have a big impact with mesmerizing underwater colorwork motifs.

  3. Midnight Garden Pullover

Midnight Garden is a bewitchingly striking pullover with cascading vines and florals adorning the yoke. The dramatic motif pairs with a relaxed fit, simple top-down construction, and DK-weight yarn for a marvelous, fun-to-knit project you’ll love making and wearing.

A woman standing in front of a blustery sea is showing off a blue cowl with delicate lace and cable motifs.

A lovely model is holding up one side of a cowl showing pale grey short row sections interspersed between blue and dark grey stripes.

In front of an ocean background, a woman is wearing a blue, textured cowl.

Project Thoughts

My earlier colourwork stitch dictionary, AlterKnit, also includes some patterns as an introduction to plugging different colourwork motifs into your projects. Those patterns are a great introduction, showing you how you can take a single motif and repeat it in different kinds of knitted designs.

What’s different about the patterns in KnitOvation is that they take motif-use to the next level. All three of the projects not only use a single motif from the book, but they show you how to combine and modify motifs.

The Domed Toque uses an all-over repeat of the Pavo motif (page 52) and then rearranges it to create wedge shapes for the crown.

The Nautilus Fingerless Mitts use four different motifs together — Crash (page 47) for the edgings, Nautilus (page 96) for the show-stopping main hand motif, Smoke in the Wind (page 49) to adorn the palms, and Trailblazer (page 50) to accentuate the thumb gussets. The pattern shows how to modify and shape motifs to fit what’s needed for mitts.

The Midnight Garden Pullover combines the leafy Trellis motif (page 62) with the bold florals of Camissonia (page 41) for an elegant floral yoke, and demonstrates another use of slicing up colourwork motifs into wedges.

In the book I have longer explanations of how I designed each one and I even included blank charts so you can experiment with inputting your own motifs to try your hand at designing a project that’s completely unique!
