New Pattern! Kids' Dissent is here!
Kids’ Dissent PUllover Pattern is out Now!
My Twin Models
I met 9-year-old twins AD and JD through a family friend and was so delighted that they were interested in being photographed in my Kids’ Dissent sweaters. I haven’t done much kid photography, so we had a little practice session to see how we would all get along and make sure they actually liked getting their picture taken.
Our first meetup was a rainy, blustery day, but fortunately, they were both the outdoorsy type and seemed more than happy to run around a forested park, down to the water and back up the scrubby hill as I snapped pictures of them. Even though about 50% of my pictures were blurry, I could tell right away that they would be great for showing off some Kids’ Dissent.
In my photography practice I’m always striving to celebrate my subjects and take joy in their uniqueness, so I wanted the kids to have fun and to like their sweaters. Instead of just choosing yarn and colours myself, I asked them what colours they would want to wear. AD asked very specifically for magenta, fuchsia, and violet and JD asked for fire colours like orange, red, and black.
Fortunately for all of us, the folks over at Ancient Arts had a huge variety of colours to choose from, several of which fit the requests perfectly.
When the day came for the actual photo shoot and I revealed the finished sweaters, they both reacted with very knit-worthy delight. AD even asked what fibre they were made of and was excited to hear they were Merino. And importantly, they thought the sweaters were very soft! I had planned for them to be comfortable, so it was great to hear I’d succeeded.
Our photo shoot consisted of us exploring forested paths, playing UFO in a circular bench by the lake, and looking at each other through a telescope. We even saw two snakes, which was extremely exciting for all of us!
I hope you can get a peek of their creative play in the photos because it was just what I was hoping for — a celebration of them being kids and playing!
Why I made This Pattern
Ever since I published my first Dissent sweater pattern, I’ve been getting requests for a kids’ version. I adore seeing people in matching sweaters, especially if one of those people is little, so it was great to finally give the people what they want. This is your chance to dress your children alike and make a matching one for you!
And of course, every time I add another pattern to this series, I come back to my original inspiration — Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her fancy collar/jabot gave me the visual idea for a colourwork yoke, but it was her lifelong commitment to pursuing justice and equity that made me want to celebrate her legacy in my own way. Here’s to gender equity and working to make it more of a reality than she was able to experience in her lifetime.

About the Sweater Pattern
The sweater is worked top-down in the round.
It’s sized for Infants to about age 10. That’s 19”/48.5 cm to 30”/76 cm chest circumference.
Colourwork charts have a light Main Colour and a dark Main Colour option so you can choose the look that most closely matches your project.
I consider this pattern to be intermediate level knitting. It includes working in the round, short row shaping, working stranded colourwork, picking up stitches, and shaping.
I used Ancient Arts Socknado, a very soft and beautiful sock yarn.
Excited about spring?
The location for the project photo shoot was at a bird sanctuary with lots of gorgeous flowers in bloom! Have a look at my latest spring flowers post to get some of that bright-light floral cheer.
