A sweet little nature meditation

Scrappy Leaves is a new hat pattern with lots of smart details:

  • It’s started with a provisional cast-on and a ribbing section that’s turned under and knit together with the first section of colourwork leaves. This gives a cozy, snug brim that looks perfectly clean on the outside with colourwork all the way to the edge.

  • Five colours of yarn give you a canvas to play with contrast, gradient, and shade. The pattern even includes a colouring sheet so you can explore different options before casting on!

  • Breezy leaf motifs are fun to knit and are a lovely adornment for an accessory that’s cute but still a wardrobe basic.

  • The crown is shaped with narrow wedges for a delicate, round top.

  • You only need a wee bit of each colour, especially the contrasting colours, so it’s a great project for using up your precious scraps. This is the kind of piece that will work equally well with your woolly Shetland yarns as with your buttery soft Merino sock yarns.

The Pattern

What makes this pattern special? Not only is the design a lovely addition to your wardrobe, the pattern has been carefully crafted so you have a great knitting experience.

  • A detailed schematic will help you decide which size to make and whether you’d like to make any modifications.

  • Lots of tutorials are linked to help you with everything from the crochet provisional cast-on to knitting colourwork with two hands

  • Colourwork charts come in two versions — one with a dark Main Colour and one with a light Main Colour. That way you don’t have to do any mental gymnastics, switching shades as you knit, whether you want to knit a dark hat or a light one.

  • The pattern includes extras like tips on colourwork, choosing yarn, and a colouring book page to explore colour ideas.

  • A printer friendly format means you get plenty of beautiful, helpful photos, but you don’t have to waste ink printing them if you like to work from a printed pattern.
