Short Row Sock Heel Video

For the June, 2021 Yarn + Pattern Club with Gauge Dye Works, I designed a new sock pattern that uses some fun techniques including a short row heel. (Here’s the pattern — Three Seasons Socks.) I haven’t used this method in a published design before, but I really like it for socks in self-striping yarns. It doesn’t interrupt the striping like my standard heel flap sock would, and you can do it as you work rather than after completing the sock like you would normally do with an afterthought heel. That’s useful because it means you can try the sock on before finishing up the toe and make sure the length is right for your feet.

It involves some short row shaping, including double wraps, which are a bit unusual, though not really difficult. I find this to be a really quick and intuitive method once you get the hang of it. But since I know a lot of us are visual learners, I made a video to show you how it’s done.

I hope it’s helpful! Share your questions and tell me about your sock knitting adventures in the comments below!

I know that’s a long video, so here are some helpful time stamps if you’re looking for a particular part:

  • Knitting a stitch together with it's wrap: 05:38

  • Purling a stitch together with its wrap: 06:30

  • Knitting a stitch together with a double wrap: 07:50

  • Purling a stitch together with a double wrap: 08:42

  • Wrapping the final stitch on the RS: 10:58

  • Wrapping the final stitch on the WS: 12:29

  • Knitting the last stitch together with its wrap after you’ve restarted working in the round: 14:00

The yarn I’m using in this tutorial is The Blue Brick Dyeworks Organic Killarney Husky Tonal in Foggy Days.

Andrea is wearing gradient, texture striped socks in shades of green, yellow, orange, red, and grey. The grey stripes are between the coloured ones and are narrower.
