Estimate Yarn Yardage by Weight
Using up yarn leftovers is a big topic, but knowing what to do with partial balls of yarn starts with being able to estimate how much yarn you have left. Here’s a video tutorial showing how to use a scale and the info found on your ball band (or Ravelry or the company’s website) to find out about how much yarn you’ve got in that little ball. If you prefer written instructions, scroll down to find them.
To estimate Yards or Metres
Weigh your yarn. Call this number A.
Divide number of yards or metres in a full skein by the weight of a full skein in grams. (You may need to convert from ounces if your label only includes ounces.) Call this number B.
Multiply A by B to get the approximate number of yards or metres in your ball. Call this number C.
FORMULA: A x B = C
Example:
I have a ball that weighs 27 grams. A full skein of that yarn has 400 yards and weighs 113 grams.
A = 27
400 ÷ 113 = 3.54 = B
27 x 3.54 = 95.58
C = about 95 yards
