Soothing Nature Photos

November is over, which, for a a lot of folks, means shopping and busyness. So I figured we could all use something to help us refocus on gratitude for the natural world and what we’ve got. This is me remembering to breathe. I’m told if you take time to look at small parts of nature images, like leaves and feathers, your nervous system will calm down, and that feels accurate to me. So feel free to zoom in and look more closely.

A dark tree line in shades of purple-hued black against a coral pink ombre sky.

Bright yellow leaves on an autumn cottonwood tree.

A delicate sand piper wading in blue water along a rocky shoreline.

All of these images were taken in the last couple of months here in Victoria. When I was younger, I moved around a lot and found that to be very exciting. I got restless being in the same place for very long. But I’ve been finding a lot of joy and connection in seeing the same places that I love in different seasons and as the years go by. It’s pretty delightful to find new ways to see the same view and new angles to appreciate the same bird species.

A big group of common mergansers floating on still ocean water. They all have orange beaks and cute spiked hair do’s.

A soothing view of leafy branches in front of a blurred water and sky background in shades of soft blue and white.

A yellow rumped warbler has just taken off from a vertical branch. Their wings are in blurred motion.

Vibrant orange and red maple leaves growing on a mossy tree.

Buffleheads are generally adorable, but watching them land is especially delightful. They spread out their bright orange feet and wings until they get close to the water, then they put their feet in front of them and draw their wings in to brake.

A group of male buffleheads coming in for a landing on calm ocean water. Their orange feet are spread out behind and in front of them.

A male bufflehead just landing on the water. His wings are halfway tucked in and his feet are extended in front of him.

A male bufflehead completing his landing. His wings are drawn in and his feet are in front like little brakes.

Come back here any time you need a reminder to take a breath.
