Machine Sewing Buttons Tutorial

My Dissent sweaters are really customizable with free hacks to turn the worsted weight cardigan into a pullover, and how to turn the fingering weight pullover into a cardigan. I made a fingering weight cardigan using Jamieson’s Ultra and I wanted to share how I attached my buttons relatively quickly. I think it’s probably more proper to hand sew buttons, but I love how quick and accurate this method is.

If you like the short, text-only version, here are some tips:

  • Tape your buttons to your button band using the ribs on the buttonhole hand to guide you as to button location.

  • Use a button setting on your machine or a zigzag stitch that matches the width between your the holes on your button with 0 length.

  • Before you start, use the dial on the side of your machine to check that the button is placed in the proper position. If you just go without testing the position you’re likely to break your button or needle or both.

  • After you sew the button on, just remove the tape.

  • If your machine leaves a thread tail on the front of the work, thread it onto a needle and draw it to the back side and tie off the threads.

Here’s a picture of the finished cardigan.
